Reconnecting the house, with the garden and the Sea.

OCRA were pleased to receive the commission to provide a contemporary extension, and internal modifications to a Georgian style house in North Devon. The original house had been adapted over time but retained many of its original features, however ad-hoc extensions had been added in the 1960’s which no longer meet the families needs. These rooms, were poorly proportioned and did not allow the family to enjoy shared space, or to experience the sea view form the rear of the house.

OCRA’s brief was to create a new heart to the home, providing a large open plan kitchen diner that connected the house to the garden and enabled the growing family flexibility in how they used the rooms.

Our solution was to create a single storey structure, with folding sliding doors and large picture windows exiting on to an elevated deck which provides view of the garden and the sea. This elevated deck enabled a large rain water harvesting scheme to be incorporated into the scheme.¬†This new space enabled the existing small pantry and kitchen to be adapted to create a new snug, ‘mud locker’ and wet room.
